How we test

Most "best tools" lists are written by people who never opened the software. We do the opposite — and we label every review so you know exactly what you’re reading.

The honesty label — our one rule

Every review on this site carries one of two badges, and we never blur the line:

  • ✅ Hands-on tested — we created an account, built the actual workflow, and have the screenshots to prove it.
  • 🔬 Research review — a rigorous research-based assessment while a hands-on build is in progress. Useful, but not yet first-hand.

If we haven’t tested it ourselves, we say so. No fabricated "experience," ever. That’s the whole brand.

Our 6-step review process

  1. 1
    Pick a real use case

Every tool is tested against a concrete small-business job — e.g. "capture a web lead, qualify it, and auto-reply in under a minute." No abstract feature checklists.

  2. 2
Sign up on the real plan

We create an actual account (free tier first) and note every friction point — onboarding, verification, paywalls, and whether a card is demanded up front.

  3. 3
    Build it, for real

We construct the actual workflow in the product and screenshot every meaningful step. If it breaks, that goes in the review.

  4. 4
    Score on five dimensions

Setup, Power, Value, Reliability, and Support — each 1–10, then weighted into the final score you see on the stars.

  5. 5
    Label it honestly

Each review is tagged 🔬 Research or ✅ Hands-on tested. We never imply we built something we didn’t.

  6. 6
    Re-test on changes

Pricing and features move fast. When a tool changes materially, we re-run the relevant tests and date the update.

How we score (out of 10)

Unlike directory sites that just aggregate star clicks, every score here is built from five weighted dimensions. The number on the stars is the weighted total.

DimensionWeightWhat we’re asking
Setup & ease25%How fast can a non-technical owner go from signup to a working automation?
Power & flexibility25%Depth of integrations, logic, and AI features — what can it actually do?
Value for money20%Real cost at small-business scale, including renewal and hidden/credit-based limits.
Reliability20%Does it run consistently? Error handling, uptime, and how it fails.
Support & docs10%Response time, answer quality, and whether the docs actually unblock you.

Our code of conduct

  • Rankings can’t be bought. No vendor pays for a position, a score, or a badge. Ever.
  • We disclose affiliate links. Some links earn us a commission at no cost to you. It never moves a score — we publish "skip it" verdicts on tools that pay commissions too.
  • We stay independent. In 2026 the four biggest review platforms (G2, Capterra, GetApp, Software Advice) became one company. We’re not owned by anyone — that independence is the point.
  • We date our updates. Tools change; stale reviews mislead. We re-test and timestamp.
