Brevo (the platform formerly called Sendinblue) is the email tool with the fairest pricing model. Most email tools charge by how many contacts you store; Brevo charges by how many emails you actually send. For a business with a big list it only emails occasionally, that’s a real, structural saving.
Where Brevo wins
- The pricing model. Pay-by-send means a 50,000-contact list you email twice a month costs far less here than on a contact-based plan like ActiveCampaign.
- Free forever, no card. The free tier includes email, a CRM, forms, segmentation and an AI content generator — enough to actually start.
- Multichannel. Email, SMS, WhatsApp and push live in one platform, so you’re not bolting on a separate SMS tool later.
Where it falls short
The editor and templates are functional rather than beautiful — Mailchimp and GetResponse feel more polished. The free plan has a daily send cap, and the genuinely useful automation (multi-step workflows, A/B testing, send-time AI) sits on the paid Standard tier. It’s a strong generalist, not a design-led specialist.
How we score it
| Dimension | Take |
|---|---|
| Setup & ease | Approachable; clean dashboard. |
| Power & flexibility | Good multichannel; automation opens up on paid. |
| Value for money | Excellent — the send-based model is the headline. |
| Reliability | Strong deliverability, mature platform. |
| Support & docs | Email support on free; multilingual. |
Who it’s for — and who should skip
Use Brevo if you want a free, fair-priced way to run email + SMS, especially with a large list you email sparingly. Skip it if you want premium templates (→ GetResponse) or the deepest behavioural automation (→ ActiveCampaign).
Our verdict: the smartest-priced email tool for small businesses — start on the free plan and let the pay-by-send model save you money as you grow.
