HubSpot is the CRM backbone — where a captured lead becomes a contact, a deal, and a tracked relationship. For our lead-response use case it’s the system of record that sits behind the capture (Make/Zapier) and the nurture (ActiveCampaign). Its free tier is genuinely excellent — the catch is what happens when you outgrow it.
Where HubSpot wins
- The free CRM is real. Up to 5 seats, contact management, deal pipelines, forms, live chat, chatbots and basic email — a functional CRM for $0, not a crippled demo.
- All-in-one. Marketing, Sales, Service, and CMS hubs share one contact record, so you’re not stitching tools together.
- Integrations. 1,800+ apps (Gmail, Slack, Teams, WordPress, Zoom…) — it plugs into nearly anything.
Where it costs you
The jump from free/Starter to real marketing power is brutal: Marketing Hub Professional starts around $890/month, and Enterprise far higher. Plans are gated by marketing-contact counts, so costs creep as your list grows, and some essentials (like SSO) are Enterprise-only. HubSpot is fantastic until the day you need Professional — then budget hard.

Use HubSpot if you want a serious CRM for $0 that you can grow into, and you’ll mostly live in free/Starter. Skip the upgrade if you only need email automation — ActiveCampaign or GetResponse deliver that for a fraction of HubSpot Professional.
